The next Galaxy Phone release by Samsung flagship line the Galaxy S10 is due for release this month. The rumor mill is suggesting big improvements in screen size coverage, processing, fingerprint reader below the screen and our main interest slow motion video capture. It seems the next phone will improve on the video quality of the slow motion and may even add better time recording at 960fps 720p but will not introduce higher resolutions.
The Galaxy S9 and Note 9 already handle slow motion very well but we wanted to see better time recording on the 960fps slow motion mode above the fractions of a second offered by last years release. The OnePlus 6, for example, offered 3.75 seconds recording at 480fps which made it our slow motion phone for the 2018 calendar year.

According to rumors the video quality should be improved along with better noise handling in low light and the stabilization has also taken a step forward in video mode. We will know more and have samples in the near future. We have good expectations for this phone when it comes to slow motion as it has a good pedigree from the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 when it comes to useful higher frame rates. If Samsung can get at least a second of recording at those speeds we will be very happy as that would translate into 32 seconds of playback in a 30p timeline. Stay Tuned -HSC
Read this. It should be improved to 1080P. It’s in the code, but will see. Also, recording time will improve to 0.4 and 0.8 seconds.

I would appreciate if someone could explain the technical limitation that prevents phones recording at this speed for longer. E.g. if they can record 4K at 60fps, then an equivalent pixel throughput would offer frame rates at 480p of ~1600fps, which clearly doesn’t seem possible for extended recording times. The only possible explanation I can think of for this is that while (some) phones can *record* 4K60, they can’t *save* that data to disk fast enough, and must therefore run a super fast video compression algorithm on-the-fly to generate the compressed data to be saved. And then I guess (I don’t know how such an algorithm’s speed would scale with video res, which is probably key) this compression algorithm cannot perform fast enough to save the high speed video on-the-fly. But would love for someone who knows more about this to weigh in with some more info!
Samsung could in theory partition a few GB of memory from the phone to record several seconds of 960fps at 720p. The sensors they are using seem to have a limitation of 240fps in 1080p and only go 480p and 960p at 720 HD. Using part of the RAM on the phone for the slow motion buffer is already happening for the 0.4sec of the S10 but they chose not to use more as their intention is for quick clips and not allow serious slow motion rec times. And yes you would need a dedicated set of ASICs chips to encode real time 960p which is also not ideal when you could fill up the storage very quickly. Even the professional high speed cameras only record in seconds not minutes at high speeds. The events they want to capture all happen very quickly which means 10 seconds or even 5 are an eternity of wasted frames. The OnePlus 6 and 6T record 3.75 seconds of 720p at 480fps because they chose a larger memory buffer for the feature that is why it was chosen as our slow mo phone of the year for 2018.
