Samsung as it is customary has released the rugged version of their flagship Galaxy phone in this case the Galaxy S7 Active. The Phone is IP68 water resistant which is not for scuba or snorkeling but will allow for it to be used in heavy rain, wash it and or for that accidental drop into the sink or puddle.
The Phone did not improve the video specs on the fabulous Galaxy S7 camera but has directly translated the performance; furthermore is might be the first Active phone that may be usable without a protective case of any kind do to it’s new Poly carbonate screen layer which makes it shatter resistance above and beyond what common Gorilla glass can withstand.
Galaxy S7 Active Camera Specs:
Main CAMERA | Primary | 12 MP, f/1.7, 26mm, phase detection autofocus, OIS, LED flash |
---|---|---|
Features | 1/2.6″ sensor size, 1.4 µm pixel size, geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video and 9MP image recording, touch focus, face/smile detection, Auto HDR, panorama | |
Video | 2160p@30fps, 1080p@60fps, 720p@240fps, HDR, dual-video rec. | |
Secondary | 5 MP, f/1.7, 22mm, dual video call, Auto HDR |
The Camera specs are identical to the regular Galaxy S7 which means they are excellent camera modules with cutting edge performance for a phone. Unfortunately this also means that the Galaxy S7 Active also has a max frame rate of 60fps at 1080p instead of the iPhone’s and Nexus 120fps at full HD 1080p.
The Galaxy S7 and Active do have 240fps at 720p HD resolution which is on par with the higher frame rates on competitive phones. It would have been great to see some higher resolution frame rates in this phone but it is already great that the camera has not been compromised compared to earlier Galaxy Active phone releases which had inferior camera modules for rugged compatibility. This also means that it could shoot slow motion 240fps underwater as long as you stay within the safe guidelines.
Rugged Certification:
– IP68 certified – dust proof and water resistant over 1.5 meter and 30 minutes
– MIL-STD-810G certified – salt, dust, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal shock resistant
The ruggedness of the phone is not as tough as a GoPro but it will survive an occasional swim or shower with no problem as long as the depth does not exceed 1.5 meters for 30min or more.
Main Specs:
- Snapdragon 820 Processor
- 5.1 Inch Quad HD AMOLED Display Same as S7
- 4 GB of RAM – 1 GB Larger than the S6 Active.
- 32 GB internal memory as standard
- Fingerprint reader with Samsung Pay. First in Active Series
- Micro SD card support up to 200 GB
- 4,000 mAh Battery. 400 mAh more than the S7 Edge.
