No matter how hard Sony and other mirror-less systems try to kill the Mirrored SLR camera, it seems Nikon and Canon refuse to go down for the count. The latest Nikon D850 is a camera that is better in every respect to it’s predecessor but now treads in the rarified air of hyper resolution sensors that do up to 9fps at full 45.7 Megapixels with the added battery grip.
Of note for us is the inclusion of a full HD 1080p 120fps mode which matches that on the Canon 1DX Mark II and the excellent quality Sony a9 mirror-less cameras. There are no real samples of the D850 in slow motion aside from compressed preview videos that seem to show some aliasing in the mode. As to a crop we will have to wait and see but in 4k mode the camera is able to extract the image from the full sensor with no field of view crop which is the holy grail for large resolution sensors.

Slow Motion Capability:
Nikon has now joined the 1080p Full HD 120fps club in their DSLRs with the D850. Which means it is now the ground floor spec you want in a higher frame rate video capture capable camera. The only sample we could find as of now is included in this video by B&H Photo at the 5 minute mark:
First Look | Nikon D850 by B and H Slowmo at 5min mark:
The color and dynamic range seem great but the resolution cannot be judged by this sample as aliasing is visible. It could be compression from the video editing and Youtube so we will refrain from doing any final comments on the quality until we have many more videos to judge. Needless to say it is great that camera manufacturers are bringing higher frame rates to their gear at ever diminishing price-points.
The Slow Motion modes will save the file in a compressed 30p, 25p or 24p wrapper for 4x or 5x slow motion for easy editing on the timeline. We like that they skipped 60fps which is what many slow motion cameras end up with. You start at the slowest possible factor in 24p if needed without the need to re-interpret the footage on the timeline.
Slow-motion: Full HD 1,920×1,080 30p (x4) 120fps
Slow-motion: Full HD 1,920×1,080 25p (x4) 120fps
Slow-motion: Full HD 1,920×1,080 24p (x5) 120fps
Once we have other samples we will let you know by posting them and comparing them to the competitive cameras that have the same spec and are either in DLSR or Mirrorless segments. – HSC
